With real estate that looks like the room they are using for the photograph, they need to pay their fair share like everyone else.

I'm glad to see this happening, but it's sad that it takes tough financial times for folks to look at these exemptions and say "enough".

Um... isn't the vatican an automonous "country" all to itself?

I am not quite sure exactly how that is handled, but I am pretty sure if the US started asking Native Americans on their reservations to start paying taxes, or asking Mexico or Canada to start paying taxes for the 'privilege' of being an American neighbor, I think it would be a bit unusual and not well received.

    I thought it was too. But if Italy pulls this off it could set a new precedence for churches everywhere to start paying up.

    They already pay taxes to Italy in an agreement for public works services etc., this just removes the 'cap' and makes them pay taxes on previously exempt property that isn't used 100% for religious purposes.

    The entire world isn't modeled after the US or what we ripped off from the Native Americans.
